It's easy to fixate on the GPUs and forget the physics that feeds them. An 8-GPU AI server is less a computer than a small space heater with a compute unit attached. Ignore that and you pay for it in throttled performance, downtime, or burned-out hardware.

How much power eight GPUs really draw

High-end compute GPUs draw 300 to 700 watts each under load. Times eight, that's 2.4 to 5.6 kW for the GPUs alone. Add two CPUs, lots of RAM, NVMe and fans, and a fully loaded server under sustained load typically pulls around 6 kW. That's more than an ordinary office circuit can safely deliver.

That's why these servers use redundant, Titanium-grade power supplies and belong on circuits rated for continuous load - not the socket under a desk.

Heat is the real problem

Every watt of power becomes a watt of heat. 6 kW of sustained load means 6 kW of heat that has to be removed continuously. If it isn't, temperature climbs, the GPUs throttle their clocks to protect themselves, and your expensive server suddenly delivers a fraction of its performance - or shuts down entirely.

Why an office or home won't cut it

Running an AI server continuously in a normal room is a bad idea - and usually not even possible:

  • Noise: under load the fans sound like a hairdryer at takeoff, on a permanent loop - unworkable in any office.
  • Heat: 6 kW warms a small room within minutes; without dedicated cooling it gets critical fast.
  • Power: a continuous 6 kW overloads typical circuits and is a genuine fire risk.
  • Uptime: no generator, no UPS, no redundancy - every power blip is a hard crash.

What a real datacenter provides
